Property from the Eric C. Caren CollectionCHARLES V OF SPAIN AND HERNANDO PIZARRORoyal letters patent concerning Hernando Pizarro, issued in the name of Charles V and signed on his behalf Manuscript document signed ("Fr. G. Car[dina]lis"), one page (12 x 8 1/4 in.; 350 x 210 mm), Madrid, 16 December 1540, written in a fine clerical hand, marked "Dupp[lica]da" at foot, countersigned, notarial endorsements, embossed paper seal of Charles as King of Spain on verso; worn at folds with some loss costing a few words at right margin, a few light stains. Housed in a half calf over marbled paper folding-case, chemise. The consignor has independently obtained a letter of authenticity from PSA that will accompany the lot. Conquistador Hernando Pizarro investigated for embezzlement while governing Peru. The present document instructs Cristobal Vaca de Castro to travel to Peru to investigate allegations of embezzlement made against Hernando Pizarro (who at the time this letter was written was in prison in Spain). When Pizarro was sent back to Peru in 1535, one of his tasks was to collect tax revenues from "las personas que en aquelle tierra avian sydo aprovechadas," and he himself stated that such revenues were immediately handed over to the King's representatives. However, several colonists had complained that such monies were extracted under duress or under threat, and complaints had also been received by the Real Audiencia of Panama. Vaca de Castro, who had been appointed governor of the Audienia of Panama, was therefore dispatched to investigate these allegations, with instructions to compensate any aggrieved parties if he felt there were grounds for doing so. Despite the protestations in the King's letter that it would be unjust for Pizarro to be punished if the accusations were false, Pizarro languished for twenty years in a Spanish jail after being recalled to Spain for the murder of Diego de Almagro.Condition ReportCondition as described in catalogue entry. The lot is sold in the condition it is in at the time of sale. The
