This very early work on paper is a fascinating, very developed small study by Charles White It appears related to White's large 1939 watercolor Kitchen Debutantes which was included in the recent traveling exhibition Charles White A Retrospective. Both depict young women leaning out of an open window. It appears to be a page taken from one of his earliest sketch books. In the fall of 1937, the young artist began his studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
