Rare first edition of a propaganda piece for the newly-established French East India Company. Following Charpentier’s appeal to merchants about the potential advantages of the Company in Discours d’un fidele sujet , first published in 1664, the Relation gives an account of its short history including the early development of trade to and from Madagascar. ABPC/RBH record no copies at auction . Kress 1151; Polak 1627; Sabin 69261. Quarto (240 x 174mm). Engraved title vignette depicting the royal coat of arms of France and Navarre, woodcut head-and tailpieces. Contemporary calf, early paper label with title in manuscript on upper cover (skilfully rebacked preserving parts of the original spine, corners restored).
