Château d'Yquem--Vintage 1988
8 bottles per lot
Offered in original wooden case Recently removed from excellent cellarage Château d'Yquem--Vintage 1988 Sauternes, 1er grand cru classé. Château-bottled Tasting note: Half a dozen notes. First tasted in June 1992, just after bottling. Then a double magnum at Farr Vintners' dinner (1993). Next, the youngest of a vertical of ten vintages, in Aspen in 1994, my marks equalling the oldest of the range, 1967. Already golden in colour; intense bouquet, harmonious, creamy. Fresh, delightful, with good length -what the French call persistence . Next, in 1995, crisp and refined, alongside the powerful '89 at the opening dinner of Rodenstock's 16th annual tasting. Two years later, its creamy bouquet opening up beautifully in the glass; perfect weight. At ten years of age at the Yquem marathon, and from a double magnum, paler than I expected with low-keyed nose. Time in hand. More recently (2000) at Len Evans' 'Imperial Dinner' preceding the '83, very sweet, good flesh and finish. The following year, honeyed depth, fairly powerful, perfect acidity. Last noted at the white/red summit at Schloss Johannisberg, Nov 2001 ***** Long life Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine 8 bottles per lot
