Château Haut-Brion--Vintage 1982
1 dozen bottles per lot
A DISTINGUISHED PRIVATE COLLECTION Christie's is proud to offer a small selection from one of the East Coast's stunning private collections. This consignor is truly a connoisseur in every sense of the word: his home is a glowing tribute to modern classics from the mediums of sculpture, photography and painting, and of course, the most sublime art of all-wine. Upon visiting this consignor, I wandered through his home, agog at the masters hanging on the walls; yet just when I thought my eyes couldn't grow wider, I entered the cellar. Or should I say, I first encountered one of the two gorgeous home cellars. Rarely have I seen such a carefully organized, painstakingly housed cache of wine. Like viewing a transformative Post-Modern masterpiece, his cellar possesses a highly attuned sense of detail and a bold perspective-in this case, rows after row of Krug Mesnil and First Growth Bordeaux in original wood cases. The first growths are here in force, from the dueling aces of 1989 and 1990, to the recent modern classics of 1995 and 1996 not to mention the pristine 82's. Classified growths en masse also join this collection, including the standouts 1982 Pichon Lalande and 1983 Palmer, a tour de force in winemaking. Old favorites from the right bank include: Certan de May, Lafleur, Pétrus, Ausone and Cheval Blanc. One of the highlights of this cellar is certainly his large offering of wine from the 40s, 50's and 60's. The list offered here are a literally a wish list of the some of world's rarest, including 47 Cheval Blanc, the legendary triumvirate of Vieux Château Certan 47,48 and 49, 55 Trotanoy in magnum format, 59 Latour and Lafite-the list goes on. Moving away from Bordeaux, one finds the incredibly rare Amarone from Dal Forno Romano as well as a smattering of California classics and upstarts that would compliment any dinner table. A dash of Champagne adds sparkle and Burgundy in good measure round out this incredible collection. We were generously offered numerous validations of provenance and condition over an engaging dinner with the consignor and friends, in which the freshness of the wine poured made age difficult to distinguish during the jocular blind tasting. It's one of life's great pleasures to share beautiful examples of wine among the like minded, and this collection offers many opportunities to do just that. Removed from ideal storage conditions from a longtime collector and friend to Christie's. Lots 1-301 Amanda Crawford CHÂTEAU HAUT-BRION It has been seven decades since the American banker Clarence Dillon purchased Château Haut-Brion and twenty two since his granddaughter Joan Dillon and her husband the Duc de Mouchy took the dramatic step of arranging the purchase of Haut Brion's illustrious neighbor, Château La Mission Haut Brion, from the Woltner family. Jean Delmas, the recently retired Technical Director, had intimate knowledge of all of the vintages being offered below. He started out working beside his father and was well positioned to take over the reigns in his first year as regisseur (General Manager) in 1961. Haut-Brion, meaning "high mound of grave," enjoys the oldest reputation in print of any wine in Bordeaux. Its most prominent early owner was Jean de Pontac (1488-1589), who built the Château, became the richest man in Bordeaux, and lived an extraordinary 101 years. The name of the Pontac family was often attached to the wine, and in 1666 Jean's great-great grandson, Francoise-Auguste, opened a tavern in London called "The Sign of Pontac's Head," where "Pontac" was sold for three times the price of any other wine. The fashionable tavern lasted for over a century. Château Haut-Brion--Vintage 1982 Pessac (Graves), 1er cru classé In original wooden case Levels: 3cm or better. "...the 1982 revealed a healthy dark ruby color with lightening at the edge. Intense, persistent aromas of saddle leather, roasted herbs, scorched earth, and sweet black currant fruit were followed by complex flavo
