Château Haut-Brion--Vintage 1989
1 dozen bottles per lot
NINETEEN EIGHTY NINE CHATEAU HAUT-BRION Jean Delmas' notes on the 1989 vintage at Haut Brion: "Start of the harvest took place on August 29th with the picking of the white grapes. It continued with the picking of the red grapes on Thursday 31st of August and continued over the first week in September. The 1893 vintage was the only other time grapes could be picked starting in August. In 1893 the harvest started on August 15. The particular soils of Haut Brion of both sand and gravels combined with hot and dry weather conditions during the spring and summer allowed the production of such a wine. Ideal climatic conditions all year permitted early ripening of the grapes. The hot and dry weather conditions during the growing season resulted in very healthy, fully matured grapes with very thick skins, still not very juicy grapes but with big seeds and a high sugar level. On August 31st the must was above 13 degrees natural alcohol. The high alcohol and low acidities at the end of August were due to the outstanding maturity of the grapes. At Haut Brion over 60 of the acreage was pruned in July or harvested green (one bunch out of two) thus enabling the grapes to arrive at a level of maturity never reached before." Château Haut-Brion--Vintage 1989 Pessac (Graves), 1er cru classé All lots in original wooden cases; Lot 284-285 with French tax capsules; Lot 284 with replacement lid Parcel: lots 284-286 "The 1989 is one of a handful of truly profound wines from a vintage that tends to be overrated, save for the Pomerols, a few St.-Emilions, and some overachievers in the Medoc. However, 1989 was an extraordinary success for Jean Delmas, the administrator of Haut-Brion and La Mission-Haut-Brion. The prodigious 1989 Haut-Brion is one of the greatest first-growths I have ever tasted. It has always reminded me of what the 1959 must have tasted like in its youth, but it is even richer and more compelling aromatically. The wine exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color, as well as a sweet nose of jammy fruit, tobacco, spicy oak, minerals, and smoke. Fabulously concentrated, with huge levels of fruit, extract, and glycerin, this wine is nearly viscous because of its thickness and richness. Low acidity gives the wine even more appeal and adds to its precociousness. The wine has not budged in development since it was first bottled, although it has always provided thrilling drinking because of its voluptuous texture. It needs another 5-6 years of bottle age before it will begin to develop Haut-Brion's fabulous fragrance. Expect it to hit its plateau of maturity around 2003-2005 and drink well for 15-25 years."
