Château Latour--Vintage 1961
3 bottles per lot
Château Latour--Vintage 1961 Pauillac, 1er cru classé Levels: lot 250 bottom neck; capsule cut to reveal château and vintage branded cork, lightly bin soiled label. Lot 251 levels: one bottom neck, two very top shoulder; two modern capsules, all capsules cut to reveal château and vintage branded corks, one slightly depressed cork, one Mähler-Besse neck label, all château bottled labels, two Nicolas strip labels "Truly a spectacular, unforgettable bottle of Bordeaux! On the nose it still showed a remarkable quantity of fresh red and black berry fruit character so fresh that I initially thought that it was 20 years younger than it turned out to be. The fruit was very ripe, but there were also a host of secondary characters present, including the lead pencil wet stones note that I often get from Latour: a minerally firmness and a very savory character on the nose. On the palate, the fruit was perfectly balanced by the structure, including tannins that were still very much present at 46 years of age. The wine showed a bit of the port-like richness traditionally ascribed to it, but with an Apollian straightness and balance that was remarkable." CC, tasted June 2009 3 bottles per lot
