CHAUCER, Geoffrey (1340-1400). The Workes . London: Adam Islip, 1602. 2 o (319 x 211 mm.) Black letter in double column, engraved portrait frontispiece, title within a historiated and architectural border, with the final errata leaf. (c4 with marginal repaired tear, E3 and N3 with repaired tear crossing text, a few other marginal repairs, some occasional dampstaining, heavier at end.) 20th-century polished speckled calf, edges gilt, by Birdsall for Brentano's (slightest rubbing to joints, small split at top of front joint). Provenance : Thomas Dove (contemporary signature on title). The last of the "early" editions of Chaucer, the second folio edition edited by Speght. There was no further reprint of his works until 1687. The engraved frontispiece shows an elaborate genealogy, "The Progenie of Geffrey Chaucer," and at center a full-length portrait of Chaucer.
