Illustrations conchyliologiques, ou description et figures de toutes les coquiles connues.... Paris: Fortin Masson, [1842-1854]. 4 volumes. Folio (480 x 332 mm). 482 plates (357 colored). 20th century quarter brown morocco and marbled boards, each volume with a wrapper bound in at the front. Scattered browning and foxing, bibliographic notes tipped in at front of volume I, text page torn through corner in volume I, dampstaining to top margin of one plate in volume II, another plate in volume III with small tear and old tape repair on verso. FIRST EDITION of this rare work. Although never completed, the extant work was issued in 85 livraisons over a period of 13 years. Chenu was a military surgeon who was appointed as Sub-inspector of springs in the Passy district of Paris after the cholera epidemic of 1834. He was a curator of the collection of the natural history collection of Jules Paul Benjamin Delessert (1773-1847). He published numerous works on natural history, including the expansive Encyclopédie d'histoire naturelle ou Traité complet de cette science d'après les travaux des naturalistes les plus éminents (Paris: 1850-1861).
