FIRST EDITION of this rare work. Although never completed, the extant work was issued in 85 livraisons over a period of 13 years. Chenu was a military surgeon who was appointed as Sub-inspector of springs in the Passy district of Paris after the cholera epidemic of 1834. He was a curator of the collection of the natural history collection of Jules Paul Benjamin Delessert (1773-1847). He published numerous works on natural history, including the expansive Encyclopédie d'histoire naturelle ou Traité complet de cette science d'après les travaux des naturalistes les plus éminents (Paris: 1850-1861).
