Indispensable Requisites for Dandies of Both Sexes; Illustrated by Sixteen Coloured Engravings, Being the first Work of the kind ever attempted in Ireland, 2nd edition. By a Lady, author of The Emblematical Garden, Which is ready for Jones's Press, Dublin: printed by J. Jones, circa 1823, nine hand-coloured plates, four only with their original flaps (two of which are detached), some soiling and tears, lacking front free endpaper, later ownership signature on rear free endpaper, original printed boards, rubbed and worn, spine lacking and with old stitched repair, 12mo, contained in green cloth boards with flaps, together with [Grimaldi, Stacey] , The Toilet, 3rd edition, published by the author, 1823, engraved frontispiece, nine hand-coloured plates, each with flap intact, spotted, marbled endpapers, stitching partially broken and page block becoming detached, contemporary brown calf gilt, rubbed, 12mo, contained in green cloth boards with flaps, plus a 19th century hand-coloured cut-out transforming figure (gentleman holding a long iron tool/saltpeter seller), operated by string attached to flap, inscribed on verso 'This pantomime trick was purchased with others by Mr. Ralph Thomas from West's Sale (Exeter Street Strand). it is now very old 18/10/93' Provenance: From the library of Percy H. Muir. See Muir, English Children's Books, Batsford, 1985, p.234. Rare emblematic book of virtues: apparently the earliest work inspired by Stacey Grimaldi's 'The Toilet', first published in 1821, and much more difficult to find. Not listed in Gumuchian. The Osborne Collection has a copy of the second edition (though apparently not the first). Second item shown at the National Book League's exhibition 'Children's Books of Yesterday' in May 1946 (item 795). (3)
