Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll with forty-two illustrations by John Tenniel, thirty-first thousand [6th edition], Macmillan, 1872, frontispiece and numerous letterpress illustrations, original red cloth covers and spine bound in at rear, yellow silk endpapers, verso of front free endpaper with gilt lettered leather book ticket of Herman Louis Kretschmer Jr., and with contemporary inscription, all edges gilt, early 20th century green crushed morocco signed 'Kelliegram Binding' on rear turn-in, foot of spine very slightly rubbed to right hand side, dot decorated raised bands, gilt lettered direct in second and third compartments, remainder gilt panelled with heart tool enclosing a crown and a card suit symbol, date lettered at foot, covers with gilt ogee design, upper and lower cover with depiction of the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit onlaid in coloured leathers respectively, both covers with additional characters onlaid in each of the four corners, gilt fillet on board edges, turn-ins with triple gilt fillets and Tudor roses, 8vo, housed in a custom-made cloth solander box (slightly worn) The binding firm Kelly & Sons was founded in 1770 by John Kellie and carried on into the first half of the twentieth century by successive members of the family. The firm came to be particularly known for its use of reverse cloth on the sides of half leather bindings, which gave a pleasing appearance as well as being water-repellent. Their elaborately onlaid morocco bindings are now particularly sought after. (1)
