Bowles's Moral Pictures, or Poor Richard Illustrated. Being Lessons for the Young and the Old, on Industry, Temperance, Frugality, etc. by the late Dr. Benj. Franklin, printed for and sold by Bowles and Carver... Published as the Act directs, 29 Sepr. 1795], engraved wooden jigsaw puzzle after Robert Dighton twenty-four (of 25) pieces each with oval scene illustrating a proverb (except one with portrait of Benjamin Franklin , lacking edge pieces and fourth oval from left on second horizontal row, toned and slightly rubbed, with some minor surface loss, each piece 11.5 x 9cm (4.5 x 3.5ins), divided into four groups (one of ten pieces, two of five, and one of four), each in matching frames, glazed Hannas, pp.114-15 (plate 10): 'The varied and detailed scenes of town and country life make this an exceptionally interesting puzzle'. Rare: whilst copies of this engraving as a broadside, or mounted on linen and folded into cloth boards, appear at auction occasionally, the only other copy we have traced in the form of a jigsaw is that in the collection of Linda Hannas.
