An oval carved wooden plaque with gilt rope borders, with central gilt and paint-decorated carving of an eagle with American flags and shields, under the banner E Pluribus Unum, the border featuring relief carved scenic cartouches with Chinese figures. Mostly illegible inscription in pencil on verso First presented to ? by Captain Galen C. Blethen, October 11, 1915 ? This was carved in ? China 1872 ?. Verso also features four stamps W. Blethen; ht. 13.25, wd. 16, dp. 1.25 in. Captain Galen Clapp Blethen (1847-1924) was the son of Captain William Blethen (1818-1905) and Ann McCobb Blethen (1825-1905). He was a master mariner and retired sea captain with the China Merchants Steam Navigation Company. Other examples are in a private collection; Carl L. Crossman, The China Trade, 1972, pp. 198-199, and in the Peabody Essex Museum, Crossman, The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, 1991, pp. 304, 312. Condition: Painted loss to left frame edge. Minor chips to right side of frame, with some pieces present. Age split in plaque near right side. Minor damage to border carvings.
