Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Original Prop Car From The Broadway Musical Production,2005, the car, boat body and seating of primarily fibreglass construction on metal chassis, with polished aluminium bonnet aged to replicate the 1968 film version. Features include a foldable windshield, radiator grille, GEN 11 number plate, and hand crank to the front, brass coach-style sidelights and 'friend-seeking' headlights, a wicker picnic basket attached to the rear, and an elaborate 'boa constrictor' horn to the right side, the polished dashboard with detailed 'Scrumtiometer' and 'Pottsometer' dials and steering wheel. The hinged running boards open to reveal folding wings approximately 98in (249cm) wide, each with an extending set of helicopter-style rotor blades, additional wings concealed in the front and rear of the car, the 33-inch (84cm) artillery wheels fold at the axles for the hovercraft-sequence of the show. Together with a Playbill and theatre programme for the production, approx. 16ft 5in long x 66in wide x 76in high (500cm x 167.5cm x 193cm) overall each wing 98in (249cm) wide FootnotesProvenance: Hilton Theatre, Broadway, New York: 34 Previews between 27th March-27th April 2005. 285 Performances between 28th April-31st December 2005. With Michael Rose, The Broccoli family, and other leading producers of the West End and Broadway produced Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. "When the car and its passengers vanish behind the swiftly descending curtain to send the audience giddily into intermission, the verdict is absolute: It's the most genuinely electric moment of the Broadway musical season." -Broadway Reviews, 28th April 2005 Few cars in the history of film and theatre are so celebrated, so central to the productions they feature in, as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The 1920's aero-engine race car combined with a ship's hull, the shimmering bonnet, and the red and yellow striped wings emerging from the vehicle's frame are instantly recognisable and beloved by generations of film and theatre-goers of all ages. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has enjoyed numerous iterations on the page, screen, and stage, each time with the direct involvement of world-leading writers and producers. The classic tale by James Bond author Ian Fleming follows the car and its eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts on an adventure to the land of Vulgaria, was originally published in 1964. Four years later, the film version (MGM/United Artists, 1968) introduced the iconic physical model as recognised today by audiences around the world. The screenplay was written by Roald Dahl, and the acclaimed Sherman Brothers wrote the score which formed the foundation of the modern hit musical. The present Lot is a major part of the history of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. As the only theatrical prop car made for the 2005 Broadway production, it featured in every performance of the New York run alongside leads actors Raúl Esparza (Potts) and Erin Dilly (Truly Scrumptious). The Broadway show was advertised as "the most fantasmagorical stage musical in the history of everything!". The production was a transfer of West End version, which made its world debut at the London Palladium in 2002. This 2005 Broadway prop car is identical to the 2002 West End prop, which to this day holds the record in the Guinness Book of Records for the most expensive stage prop at £750,000. The West End car was disassembled after the production ended, making the Broadway prop the largest and most impressive stage-used version still in existence. The prop car of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a finely detailed and faithful replica of the car from the beloved film. Instead of an engine, the prop car sits on a wheeled frame and used hydraulics and an intricate system of in-built lighting to bring the vehicle to life. While the film used as many as six car models for the numerous racing, flying, and hovercraft stunts, this prop car had to perform all these roles in the same show. The Broadway musical was nominated for five
