"Breakfast 1977 acquired from Chris Capper's post-graduate exhibition in 1977, typifies his post-student style. Working with a restricted colour range of blue, white, grey and black, Chris Capper with a free painterly style, simplifies and reduces his subject matter to flat uncluttered areas and patterns of lines. His early paintings are mainly concerned with suburban images and landscapes which often exploit the formal device of window vistas onto suburban backyards. Often areas are filled with loosely painted patterns of flat parallel stripes or, as in Breakfast, the formal elements of the window frame are simplified and slightly distorted to enhance the rhythm and patterns of the subject".
