Contemporary blue crushed morocco, large Greek-style gilt roll-tooled border on sides, central gilt armorial of Hope of Craighall, spine ruled and decorated gilt in compartments (rubbed, front cover a little faded, a few scuff marks), gilt edges. Provenance : Thomas Hope (1769-1831), art collector and connoiseur (arms on sides) -- Lord Francis Pelham Clinton Hope, Christie's sale 25 July - 27 July 1917, lot 107. FIRST EDITION, IMPORTANT PRESENTATION COPY, with good wide margins, inscribed on verso of title: "To Tho s. Hope Esq. from the author". The work was published privately by James Christie antiquary and auctioneer, "in only 100 copies which he distributed to his friends ... Christie's interest in Greek vases was sparked by his friendship with Charles Towneley; he also produced a catalogue of Thomas Hope's vases. The examples discussed in this work are in fact from Hope's collection and from that of the British Museum" (Blackmer). Blackmer 347.
