Das griechische Wort Pantokrator bedeutet wörtlich soviel wie «Allherrscher» und bezeichnet einen Typus der Christusdarstellung, der aus der byzantinischen Kunst stammt und in der ganzen orthodoxen Welt verbreitet ist. Pantokratorikonen werden vor allem zur Osterzeit verehrt.

Moscow 1833 - 1847. Egg tempera over chalk ground on panel and silver 84 zolotnik. Christ as the Universal Ruler with opened book giving a blessing. Hallmark and maker's mark. Signs of age, silver losses in the halo.

The Greek word Pantocrator literally means «ruler of all» and describes a type of depiction of Christ that originates from Byzantine art and is widespread throughout the Orthodox world. Pantocrator icons are worshipped especially at Easter time.
