CHURCHILL, Sir WINSTON S., British Prime Minister . Three typed letters signed ("Winston S. Churchill") to Colonel Frank Clarke, Chartwell and London, 23 February 1948-24 October 1961. Together 3¼ pages, 4to and 8vo, on Churchill's personal stationery, all with file holes in upper corners . [ With :] Photograph signed ("Winston S. Churchill"), n.p., n.d., 189 x 127 mm. (7¾ x 5 in.) including mount , a half-length portrait of a pugnacious Churchill in suit and bow-tie, signed in lower blank portion of mount. Three chatty letters from the former Prime Minister: 23 February 1948: "...I do not wish to receive favours in small matters from a Government I am strongly criticizing. Life is increasingly difficult here and it is going to be much worse. I still meditate a lightning descent on the United States. Baruch wishes to look after me...I should travel both ways in the 'Queens' and spend only five or six days in what is still the 'land of the free'..."; 2 June 1948: "When I was in Holland the other day Prince Bernhardt smoked one or two or [ sic ] my cigars which you so kindly sent me. He liked them so much that he said he wished to get some for himself. He has no difficulty in the matter of currency, as Holland is still largely a civilized country. I wonder whether you would very kindly tell the company to get in touch with Prince Bernhardt..."; 24 October 1961: "How very kind of you to send me two boxes of excellent cigars..."; together 4 items .
