CHURCHILL, Sir Winston Spencer (1874-1965). Autograph letter signed ('W') to Pamela, Countess of Lytton, Salisbury Hall, St Albans, 30 August 1908, 2½ pages, 8vo ; envelope. Provenance : Pamela, Countess of Lytton; and by descent.
CHURCHILL, Sir Winston Spencer (1874-1965). Autograph letter signed ('W') to Pamela, Countess of Lytton, Salisbury Hall, St Albans, 30 August 1908, 2½ pages, 8vo ; envelope. Provenance : Pamela, Countess of Lytton; and by descent. ON HIS APPROACHING MARRIAGE AND HIS 'STRANGE SOUL'. Hinting at neglect, Churchill asks if Pamela has been 'thinking about me a little sometimes recently'; [Pamela's husband] Victor has written with congratulations on his engagement and to say how happy he himself has been in his marriage; as for Churchill's own attitude, 'the delay & the excitement fret me sometimes', and he is oppressed at moments by the feeling that 'the vast domain of possibility is closed down to one single definite solution', admitting that there is 'stress as well as hope in my heart; with much reverence & resolve; & even the tenderest feelings cast their shadows upon the strange soul of your friend'; ending with apologies for not being able to alter some plans to accommodate her. Churchill had been re-introduced to Clementine Hozier early in 1908; he proposed to her in the Temple of Diana by the lake at Blenheim, whilst sheltering from a shower of rain. They were married at St Margaret's, Westminster, on 12 September. Salisbury Hall, from which Churchill writes, was the home of his mother after her second marriage in 1900 to George Cornwallis-West (who was only a fortnight older than Churchill himself).
