Churchill, Winston (1874-1965) Typed Letter Signed, January 1918, and Photographs. Single sheet blind stamped with the emblem of the Ministry of Munitions of War, Whitehall Place, laid paper watermarked Johnson Superfine. To British Army officer, engineer and colonial administrator Lieutenant-Colonel Sir James Forrest Halkett Carmichael (1868-1934), advising that a recommendation has been made to the Prime Minister that Carmichael should be appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire, with the approval of the King, and offering hearty congratulations, addressed and signed in ink, verso toned from an old frame, remnants of mounts on verso, hole and tear from clerical processing in upper left corner, 10 x 8 in.; [together with] two black-and-white photographs taken by Flight Officer Ron Buck of Churchill in January of 1942 at the controls and on board the flying boat RMA Berwick, a Boeing 314a Clipper captained by John Kelly-Rogers, while taking a secret and perilous eighteen-hour transatlantic flight just after the bombing of Pearl Harbor; some tears, folds, each 8 x 5 in.; [and] a photograph of a young Churchill.
