Together 7 pages, 4to and 8vo, on 10 Downing St., Hyde Park Gate and Chartwell stationery (some with punch holes at top left), all with original envelopes . In a quarter morocco slipcase. "AFTER THE SAD LOSS OF THE FIRST ONE, I FEEL THAT I WOULD RATHER NOT HAVE ANOTHER DOG JUST NOW" A touching series of letters to the woman at Duke Street Kennels who cared for Churchill's poodle, Rufus II, during the dog's illness. "I am sorry that Rufus has developed this distressing complaint," he writes her on 25 January 1948, "and I hope you will let me know at the end of three weeks whether or not he has recovered. After the sad loss of the first one, I feel that I would rather not have another dog just now. Please do not therefore look for another poodle for me...I am very grateful to you for the trouble you have taken in looking after Rufus during my absence abroad. Pray let me know what is owing in the way of veterinary fees." Rufus II survived. He was the successor to Rufus, a French poodle, who was run over and killed in a traffic accident. Crushed by the loss, he soon acquired this second French poodle, calling him Rufus II. The poodle made subsequent visits to Miss Lobban's kennel, including one during Churchill's second term as Prime Minister: 13 December 1953: "...I was so glad to see Rufus back looking so well and happy." On 4 December 1956 he reports that "Rufus is delighted with his new blue collar and lead, and it suits him very well." Another new collar and lead arrives in 1958 and Churchill reports "It suits him very well, and he is most proud of it." Together 7 items .
