CHURCHILL, Winston S. and TRUMAN, Harry S. Large color photograph signed on mount ("Winston S. Churchill" "Harry S. Truman"), Potsdam, Germany, n.d. [July 1945]. An overhead shot of a PLENARY SESSION OF THE POTSDAM CONFERENCE, showing Churchill, Truman and Stalin (19 x 22 3/8in.; three small abrasions on image; crackling). THE BIG THREE SHAPE THE POSTWAR ORDER AND PLAN THE INVASION OF JAPAN at the last of the wartime conferences. The camera overlooks Churchill (seated at lower center). Proceeding clockwise round the table from Churchill are: Maj. Arthur Birse (Churchill's interpreter), Clement Attlee, Andrei Vyshinksi, Vyacheslav Molotov, Stalin, Vladimir N. Pavlov (Stalin's interpreter), Adm. Nikolay G. Kuznetsov, Adm. William D. Leahy, James F. Byrnes, Truman, Charles Boehlen (Truman's interpreter), Joseph Davies, Alexander Cadogan, and Anthony Eden. Future foreign minister Andrei Gromyko is also visible (seated behind Adm. Kuznetsov). Momentous changes shaped the conduct of this conference, from Churchill's defeat and replacement by Attlee, to the successful American detonation of the first atomic bomb at Alamogordo, New Mexico. Early signs of cold war tension appeared when the British and Americans chose not to reveal their atomic secret (and Stalin chose not to reveal that he had been spying on the Manhattan Project all along). Over the course of the conference the three powers came to final agreements about the division of Germany and the timetable for Russia's entry into the Pacific War.
