(Pencil note incorrectly dating the document “Jan. 20th 1900.”) READY TO BOLT BACK TO BRITAIN TO DEFEND HIS NEWLY WON SEAT IN PARLIAMENT for Oldham, Churchill writes: “Shall go to Winnipeg tonight. Expect cables there from England if Dissolution certain shall discontinue tour and return by boat sailing 27th.” Churchill gained his seat on the strength of the publicity flowing from his daring escape from a Boer POW camp, detailed in his London to Ladysmith via Pretoria . He embarked on a book tour to the U.S.A. and Canada, but was surprised to encounter hostility from many American audiences over the British policy towards the Boers. His sudden return to Britain was prompted by the impending death of Queen Victoria (who died 22 January). In 2008 we sold a letter he wrote on this same date, to Pamela Plowden, musing somewhat irreverently: "The Queen is dying, is perhaps already dead ... And see how this complicates and clouds all my plans, disturbing not only nations but Winstons." The monarch's death prompted the dissolution of Parliament and the cancellation of his lecture tour, "spoiling the already scanty profits," he grumbled to Plowden, and a hurried return, "as fast as steamer and train can carry me."
