"I, YOUR FATHER," REGARD "YOUR WELFARE AS A SACRED CHARGE" AN ANXIOUS AND EMOTIONAL CHURCHILL TRIES TO PUT THE BRAKES ON SARAH'S PLANS TO ELOPE with an Austrian actor, 18-years her senior. "I cannot help feeling very anxious about you... You owe it to yourself & to us, your parents, to pause & consider maturely the consequences of the step you have mentioned you might take... I trust you will wait until researches in several countries enable us to find out who this gentleman is, what are his race & nationality, what is his age, & what are his antecedents; has he been married before & if so how often? What were the circumstances of his divorce or divorces? Has he children living, etc.?" He implores Sarah to wait until these investigations were concluded. "It is the least service--I hope not the last--I, your father, who regarded yr welfare as a sacred trust--can render you." Sarah Churchill fell in love with the actor Vic Oliver (born Victor Oliver von Samek) when they both appeared in the 1935 musical comedy, Follow the Sun . She went ahead with the marriage in spite of her father's counsel, only to divorce Oliver in 1945. A second marriage to Antony Beauchamp lasted only six years and a third marriage ended with the death of her husband, Henry Audley, in 1963. In addition to her marital woes, Sarah battled alcoholism throughout these years, and was arrested for public drunkenness in California in 1957 and again in London in 1961.
