CHURCHILL, Winston S. Autograph letter signed ("Winston S.C.") to Muriel Wilson 7 September 1905. 5 pages, 8vo, 105 Mount Hope stationery . "YOU HAVE NEVER GIVEN ME THE SMALLEST SCRAP OF ENCOURAGEMENT" A tormented letter to the love who spurned his proposal for marriage. He begins by apologizing for an earlier effort. "My letter was not really so rude as it looked," Churchill says, as he launches into another odd mixture of benevolent good wishes and bitter resentment. "I never in my most secret heart make any reproaches against you. I have absolutely no claim upon you. You have never given me the smallest scrap of encouragement. Indeed you have always been very kind to me...All this is vy humble; but I am not humble really & growl with anger to be treated with benevolent indifference. But what can I do? It is a stupid world & I am a fool in it..." He shifts to political gossip, speaks with pride about competing the manuscript of his biography of his father, Lord Randolph Churchill. "Nearly 1100 pages of writing. But on the whole I am satisfied...Did I tell you that Longmans have offered me £4000 for it! I have refused. I want £6,000; & now am willing to take my pig to market round all the publishers." He closes with one last dig: "That nice Barbara Lister, whom I used to like & admire so much is married to a perfectly detestable nincompoop...His name is Wilson! I hope he is no relation of yours."
