CHURCHILL, Winston S. Great Contemporaries . London: Thornton Butterworth Ltd., 1937.
CHURCHILL, Winston S. Great Contemporaries . London: Thornton Butterworth Ltd., 1937. 8° (213 x 140mm). 21 half-tone plates. Original blue cloth, spine and upper side lettered in gilt, sides stamped in blind, top edge blue. Provenance : Winston S. Churchill (presentation inscription to:) -- Alfred Duff Cooper (1890-1954, first Viscount Norwich; bookplate). FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY inscribed by the author to Duff Cooper in the month of publication: 'To Duffie from Winston October 1937'. Cooper was secretary for war from 1935, and 1st Lord of the Admiralty from 1937. He served in Churchill's War Cabinet as minister of information and then, crucially, as the prime minister's liaison with the Free French (and, from 1944, ambassador to France); his key role was 'to patch up the often turbulent relations between de Gaulle and Churchill... it is greatly to his credit that at the operating level the relationship between the two governments remained more or less satisfactory' ( DNB ). Churchill refers to Cooper in this book in his profile of Douglas Haig: 'no one who has read Mr Duff Cooper's Talleyrand requires other assurances of his skill in narrative or his literary competence or quality' (p.229). Woods A43(a).
