CHURCHILL WALKS ALONGSIDE THE KAISER DURING THE GERMAN ARMY MANEUVERS IN SILESIA IN 1906. A smiling Churchill in full dress, walks alongside the Kaiser, who gestures towards the camera. A retinue of officers trail respectfully behind the two men, (one soldier holds the Imperial German flag, flapping in the wind). Cavalry officers and their horses mill in the fields on the left. Churchill was then serving in the Colonial Office, and before setting out on this junket received sound advice from his own sovereign--via Prime Minister Campbell-Bannerman--to avoid "being too communicative and frank with his nephew" the German Emperor. Churchill was deeply impressed by what he saw and wrote his aunt afterwards, "I am very thankful there is a sea between that army and England." A remarkably rare association of two men who--for good and ill--shaped the destiny of 20th century Europe. (2)
