CHURCHILL, Winston S. Lord Randolph Churchill . London: Macmillan and Co., 1906. 2 volumes, 8 o . Half-titles, frontispiece photo portrait of Lord Randolph Churchill. Illustrated with tipped-in facsimiles. Maroon cloth, stamped in gilt, in a half-morocco gilt case. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED on front free endpaper of each volume: "To Sir Ernest Cassel from Winston S. C. 1 Jan. 1906." Churchill's masterful biography of his father is more than an exercise in filial piety or a defense of Lord Randolph's provocative stand on Home Rule. It is a superb political history of the late Victorian era, told with verve and keen insight into the motives of the major players. Cassell (1852-1921) was a German-Jewish immigrant who became one of the leading financiers and philanthropists in England. Woods A8(a) (2)
