CHURCHILL, Winston S. My African Journey . London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1908.
CHURCHILL, Winston S. My African Journey . London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1908. 8° (183 x 122mm). With the publisher's catalogue. 61 half-tone plates and 3 maps. Red half morocco by Bumpus with their stamp, edges gilt. Churchill's signature, dated 1955, on the original front endpaper. Provenance : Sotheby's, 31 July 1991, lot 642. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. Churchill's East African journey in the last two months of 1907 mixed hunting expeditions with enquiries into colonial affairs. The publication of this book, and Churchill's return to Britain mark a new chapter in his personal and professional life: in April 1908 the new prime minister H.H. Asquith brought Churchill, aged 33, into the Cabinet as president of the Board of Trade; by coincidence, it was on the same weekend, at a party at his mother's house near St Alban's, that he fell in love with the 23-year old Clementine Hozier. Woods A12.
