CHURCHILL, Winston S. Photograph signed ("W.S. Churchill"), n.d. [ca. 13 December 1941]. Black and white photograph (5 x 7 7/8in.) of Churchill on deck of H.M.S. Duke of York with his daughter Mary, en route to America. CHURCHILL SPEEDS HIS WAY TO AMERICA AFTER PEARL HARBOR aboard the H.M.S. Duke of York . "I must go to Washington at once," Churchill decclared after Pearl Harbor, "with the strongest team of expert advisers who could be spared." His daughter Mary, a Lance Bombadier in the Auxiliary Territorial Services, bids him farewell where Churchill came aboard the ship on 12 December at Gourouck, Scotland. In 10-days at sea Churchill prepared three papers for FDR, one urging a North African strategy for 1942, a second on holding actions in the Pacific, and a third calling for a cross-Channel attack in 1943. On 22 December he arrived in the New World; and 23-days later he returned to England with everything he wanted: a Germany-first strategy, and the Anglo-American partnership on a solid wartime footing.
