CHURCHILL, Winston S. Two autograph letters signed and two letters signed to Mr Garnett (of the Free Trade League), 105 Mount Street and Blenheim Palace, 30 March 1904 - 6 July 1905, 8 pages, 8vo, in autograph, and 5 pages, 8vo, secretarial , bifolia. Provenance : Swann, 24 October 1985, lot 35. THE FREE TRADE CANDIDATE. Churchill has been approached to stand as the non-party Free Trade candidate, with the tacit support of the local Liberals, for North West Manchester, the 'premier constituency of Lancashire': 'This idea is very attractive to me and I think the plan, if carried out, could not fail to be favourable to our cause'; the opposing majority is very large, but Churchill is willing provided 'sufficiently influential representation' is made to him; it is important 'that a broad Free Trade line of battle should be formed & issue joined without delay'; in the meantime he is keeping Central Sheffield and Central Birmingham waiting on the same matter, which is occasioning some awkwardness. The financial and commercial heartland of North-West Manchester, although a Tory stronghold for more than 50 years, was even more ardently pro-free trade. Churchill was elected for the division on 13 January 1906, with a majority of 1,241. Writings of Sir Winston Churchill © Estate of Winston S. Churchill (4)
