CHURCHILL TO BE FREE TO DRAW ON MY ACCOUNT" Rebounding from his nasty collision with a car while crossing Fifth Avenue, Churchill tells First National Bank--precursor to today's Citibank--to allow his wife access to his account: "During the rest of my stay in America I wish Mrs. Churchill to be free to draw on my account with you. Will you kindly send her a check-book. I enclose [not present], herewith, specimens of her signature." He had come to America on a lecture tour in December, and it was from the Waldorf that Churchill reluctantly left the comforts of his bathrobe and slippers at 9:30 at night on 13 December to meet with Bernard Baruch. He wasn't sure of the address, but having been there before thought he would remember it by sight. Darkness, however, dimmed his recollection, and after several irritating transits up and down the avenue and fruitless inquiries to doormen, Churchill was returning to his cab when he was struck by a car and seriously injured. After a spell in Lenox Hill hospital he convalesced in the Bahamas, then returned to New York and the Waldorf on 25 January. The night following the date of this letter, 28 January, Churchill finally resumed his lecture tour, and kept the engagement at Brooklyn Academy of Music he was supposed to have made on 14 December. In the audience--courtesy of the speaker--was the driver of the car that struck him, Mario Contasino.
