Original vellum with coat-of-arms stamped in gilt on upper covers, spines gilt, gilt edges (some spines and covers lightly browned), green leatherette slipcases. LIMITED EDITION, NUMBER 106 OF 3,000 COPIES, WITH AN ADDITIONAL UNCORRECTED SUBSCRIBER’S PROOF COPY OF VOLUME I, issued to Mr & Mrs M.G. Evans. Tipped in at the front of volume I is a typed letter stating: ‘This volume does not form part of the official collected edition, and is issued to registered subscribers only as an uncorrected proof copy for examination … The official volume to which this corresponds will be despatched at the end of February, 1974, on completion of final corrections … This subscribers’ proof copy has not been passed for publication by the editors, and is intended as a sample only’. The centenary edition was published with a limitation of 3000 copies, 2000 copies for the British Empire and Commonwealth excluding Canada and 1000 copies for the United States and Canada. The personal bookplates are not pasted into the books but separate, together with the relevant paper work. Woods, p. 391.
