Beschreibung:

Circle of Philips Wouwerman (Dutch, 1619-1668) A grey charger, his rider and a hound in a landscape oil on bevelled oak panel (bevelled on two sides) h:39 w:29 cm Provenance: Syston Park, near Bath, the home of Monica Rawlins, and by descent to Elisabeth Luard at Brymerheryn, Wales. Estimate £1,000-1,500 Oil on panel. Reverse of panel has bevelled edges at bottom and left edge (viewed from the reverse) thus it seems likely that the top and right edges have been cut down. The composition would suggest this also as it stops abruptly, with the man and dog loking at something out of the picture plane. Some wear and abrasion in thinner paint passages in the sky. Very patchy and uneven varnish which is yellowed and degraded. Possibly over-cleaned in the past. Quite dirty, scratch in the sky, three tiny paint losses lower right-hand corner. Old Christie's stencil - LC 644. Old Christie's stencil Lo 644.
