Title printed in red and black within a woodcut architectural border, historiated initials. (Title with expert repairs in the margins, spotting, some marginal soiling.) Brown calf by Arias and Sons, panelled and roll-tooled in blind to style, gilt turn-ins and edges. Provenance : an early reader (title inscription, some marginalia and underlining) -- purchased from José Porter, 1952.

A rare edition of Ciruelo's most celebrated work, his treatise on witchcraft, interpretation of dreams, false astrology, divination and superstition. 'The treatment of the subject reveals extraordinary enlightenment in a period clouded by profound and almost universal superstition' (Maggs cat. 495, no 243). WorldCat apparently locates just one copy of this edition: at the Catholic University of America. First published at Alcala in 1530. Palau III, 54942.
