With ms ID of Dr. J.M. Merchant at top."Duties of Ward-Masters" and "Instruction for the Medical Officer of the Day." Manuscript 2pp orders, "Special Town Council of the Town of Warren," February 18, 1860. Orders for quarantine for a couple of families to prevent the spread of smallpox. 1p. note to Doct. Merchant, United States Internal Revenue, Providence Rhode Island, May 28, 1864. Requested papers sent and travel info. needed. Spanish-American War: Half-page note for Mary [Merchant] on YMCA note paper, June 24, 1898, signed Howard DeWolf. Ring binder with political and patriotic covers. Approximately 29 are single-color Civil War covers, 27 multi-color covers [most red-blue-(white)]. One page has a remnant of a 1.25 x 2 in. printed silk parade flag (30 stars). Most unused. Some relate to the election: a number are pro-Lincoln; one shows Lincoln's foot kicking Davis' butt; one has Davis and Stephens on bars of a Confederate flag (with three large stripes and seven stars), with central stripe "A secession envelope." Some relate to slavery: one with a number of Africans American running to Fort Monroe, with a planter yelling for them to come back, one of the (former) slaves answers: "Can't come back not now, massa; Dis chile's CONTRABAN';" another shows a slave with the caption "The Innocent Cause of the War." Yet another shows a row of soldiers dressed like "Uncle Sam" daring a line of Confederate soldiers with a caption "Contraband barricade / Come and get your property." One page has three covers that all reference Beauregard. Spanish-American War: 4 single-color, 18 multi-color covers. There are also 30 "Hope" covers - orange paper with anchor with "Hope" at the top of the arch/wreath around the anchor. Some of these were used. A fair number of these have "Remember the Maine" in some part of the cachet/design. As a note, the colors on these later covers are more elaborate with green, yellow, grey, as well as red and blue. The notebook also contains a few letters, most to Mary Merchant, most on unit stationery or YMCA stationery. One letter is from Walter Crowley in Havanna (Cuba) to Howard DeWolf, Providence (RI). A couple letters to Mary are just signed "Charlie," two are signed "Charles Cutler." The "Obituary Record of the Graduates of Bowdin College and the Medical School of Maine... for 1921 has an obituary for Joseph Milford Merchant (1834-1921). After graduating in 1858, he settled in Warren, RI and established a practice there. He enlisted as a Surgeon during the Civil War. He married Hannah Martin (d. 1900) on Christmas 1862 and they had four children. At the time of Dr. Merchant's death, their son, Dr. Marcius Merchant, and daughter, Mary, survived them. In this archive are letters to Mary from Charlie Cutler. In each he tells Mary to give his regards to Marcius (her brother). There are also letters from Howard DeWolf, who ended up marrying Mary. One of the descendants has put a note on one of the pages indicating that Charlie was very upset when Mary married someone else, and Charlie ended up never marrying.
