Beschreibung:

Company E. Consisting of two Company books and approximately 450 related manuscript, printed and partially printed returns, General Orders, and similar documents, and three GAR ribbons, one from Post 477 of West Milton, Ohio. Sowry, of West Milton, Ohio was commissioned second Lieutenant a few weeks before Christmas in 1861, and served with Co. E until his discharge on January 17, 1865, having seen service throughout much of the Western Theater. When Co. E's Captain James C. Kelsey resigned from the service on February 20, 1863, Sowry was promoted to the rank of Captain, a position he held until war's end. This archive -- likely the contents of Sowry's field desk -- has descended through his family. Much of the material in this group consists of the onerous paperwork required of company captains by the War Department in Washington. The bulk of the archive consists of clothing and ordnance returns; quarterly returns for unit deaths; returns and explanations for lost or non-functional items; request's for leaves for personnel; abstracts of expenses; invoices for camp equipment; both printed and hand-written General Orders directing a Captain to perform certain duties in a certain manner; and how much materiel was saved. These form an in-depth picture of the daily existence of troops, and the cost of war. Among the group is Sowry's commission to 2nd Lieutenant; a fascinating manuscript, signed by 31 members of the company, each describing the amount and type of clothing they lost at the battle of Shiloh; several manuscript court-martial orders for deserters; letters attempting to recover bounty money; a partially printed manuscript for expenses incurred while transporting a deserter; hospital requests, and much more. In addition to this large group of papers, the archive includes a tall folio cloth bound "Descriptive Book" containing pre-printed pages on which Sowry was required to keep pertinent company records of personnel -- their death, discharge, desertion, as well as a similar sized, cloth bound book in which "Morning Reports" were kept. The former covers the months between Nov. 1861 and Nov. 1864 and provides a in-depth look at company strength, movements, and cryptic remarks of each day's activities. The 48th saw heavy fighting at Shiloh, where they lost about one quarter of their strength; they also participated in the battles of Corinth, Sabine Pass, Chicasaw Post, the Siege of Vicksburg, Sabine Crossroads, and Fort Blakely. At Sabine Crossroads, after inflicting severe punishment to the enemy, many members of the unit were overrun and captured. A fine, Ohio collection. Condition:Generally fine.
