Lot of 2 covers addressed to John Berkley Grimball of Spartanburg, SC, sent by his son John Grimball, a lieutenant in the Confederate Navy. First includes CS America in the address, is dated 8 Sept. 1863, initialed J.G., stamped SHIP and inked Ship letter, and postmarked at Wilmington, NC, Dec. 9. Second dated 1 Oct. 1863, initialed J.G., stamped STEAM-SHIP and postmarked at Charleston, SC, Nov. 10. John Grimball (1840-1922) served in the US Navy from 1854 to 1860 but appears on the rolls of the South Carolina Navy at Fort Moultrie soon after Union forces abandoned in late-December 1860. He enlisted in the Confederate Navy in the days after Fort Sumter and was sent to Savannah Station, where he was given the rank of master, then acting lieutenant, then 1st lieutenant by early 1862. After serving on the CSS Arkansas and Baltic in 1862 and early 1863, Lt. Grimball was sent abroad to the CS Navy Station in France. From there, he boarded the CSS Shenandoah and was aboard her for most of her around-the-world trip which ended when she became the last Confederate vessel to surrender, at Liverpool, England, on November 6, 1865.
