April 2, 1865 Broadside newspaper Extra (20 1/4 x 13 3/4 in.; 517 x 348mm), woodcut vignette of the American flag, text in six columns; some marginal creases and chips. The consignor has independently obtained a letter of authenticity from PSA that will accompany the lot. Breaking news of the fall of the Confederate capital in a "stop-press" broadside, one week before Lee's surrender to Grant. The early and brief dispatch from Virginia follows several exultant headlines ("Glorious News! Another Terrific Battle! Richmond Taken! Victory! Victory! Petessburgh [sic] Evacuated"): "A Despatch from Gen. Grant from 8:30 this A.M. says Petersburgh is evacuated. He also thinks Richmond will soon be ours." A second dispatch, datelined simply "Later," continues, "He is rushing on to cut off Lee's retreat. Secretary Stanton telegraphs Gen.
