Small archive of manuscript letters and documents relating to the service of surgeon J. E. Nagle, including 3 letters by William J. Hardee.
V.p.: 1861-63. 13 items in all. Format and condition vary. includes three letters by william j. hardee, including two alss. As evidenced by these manuscripts, Nagle, who must have known Hardee prior to the war, was appointed by the General to command the hospital at Pocahontas. This archive includes a letter by Hardee appointing him to that post as well as another commending his service there. In October 1861, Nagle served on Jeff Thompson's expedition into Missouri. Following Hardee's promotion to Major General and command in Kentucky, Nagle was assigned to the 6th Kentucky Cavalry. Nagle would later become the surgeon of the 33rd Alabama and at the Confederate hospital at Graysville, Georgia. Besides the three letters from Hardee, this archive includes documents relating to his career from T. H. Bradley, H. T. Hodnett, D. G. White (3), J. A. Leavy, A. L. Breysacker, W. W. Boyd and C. E. Michel (2).
