A note of thanks for book received. With a three-quarter length CDV. -- William T. HERMAN. ALS ("W.T. Sherman"). Washington, D.C., 16 May 1876. 2 pp., 8 o, integral blank, on Headquarters Army of the United States stationery. A letter of introduction. SHERMAN'S CALLING CARD signed by him on the verso. -- [W.T. Sherman] L.M. Dayton. Transcript of Special Field Orders No. 54, Smithfield, N.C, 12 April 1865. 1 page, 4 o. "The General Commanding announces to the Army that he has official notice from Gen. Grant that Gen. Lee surrendered to him his entire army on the 9th inst. at Appomattox C[ourt] H[ouse] Virginia. Glory be to God and to our country with all honor to our comrades-in-arms toward whom we are marching. A little more labor, a little more toil on our part and the great race is run, and our government stands regenerated after four long years of bloody war."-- Ulysses S. GRANT.
