We the People of the State of South Carolina, in Convention assembled, do declare and ordain...done at Charleston, 20 December 1860... Entered according to Act of Congress in the Clerk's Office ...for the Eastern District of Michigan, 1865." 1 page, large folio, 775 x 610mm (30½ x 24 in), in fragile condition: edges frayed with small losses to a few letters along right-hand side, some repairs from verso, minor stains. THE "SCROLL OF TREASON": SOUTH CAROLINA'S ACT OF SECESSION. A large-format lithographic facsimile of the original manuscript Act of Secession, captured by Union cavalry in the closing days of the Civil War. It displays the facsimile signatures of D.F. Jamison, President of the Convention, as well as those of the 169 delegates. At the bottom, an explanatory note reads, "this scroll of 'treason' was found in the house of Dr. Lamb, Secretary of State...while out on a two days scout"; the Union troops involved and their commanders are specified, and the date "March 3, 1865," is noted. An extremely rare broadside, reproducing the act by which South Carolina became the first state to declare its secession; no other copies have been traceable in standard sources.
