Hand-sewn American flag, approx 23 by 70 inches, linen and muslin, featuring 34 white stars on a blue field and three red and three white stripes, several stars featuring initials embroidered in white ("HDB," "CGW," AH," "KH," etc), embroidered at lower left corner "April 17th 1862 / Clara Ward Howard," some discoloration to fabric, loss at hem, in custom shadow box. This flag was made by Clara Ward Howland, daughter of Oliver Delancey Ward of New York who married artist Alfred Cornelius Howland in 1871. The U.S. Flag bore 34 stars between the years 1861-1863. Clara Howland's signature is in a slightly different color thread than the date, leading us to believe it was added in later years after her marriage. See illustration.
