Civitates Orbis Terrarum Starting price: 600 000 CZK (22 642 EUR) Hammer price: 1 300 000 CZK (49 057 EUR) Description dimensions: 41 x 29 x 4 cm (h x w x d) period: 1572-1617, Germany, Cologne This set of four volumes of large city atlases published by Cologne clergyman Georg Braun (1541-1622) and largely engraved by Franz Hogenberg (1535-1590) contained 546 vistas, bird's eye views and map views of cities around the world. The first volume of Civitates Orbis Terrarum was published in Cologne in 1572. The sixth and final volume appeared in 1617. Franz Hogenberg was the son of Munich-based engravers who settled in Malines. He engraved most of the plates for Ortelius' Theatrum and most of those in Civitates, and he was probably responsible for the inception of the project. Over 100 different artists and cartographers, the most important of which was Antwerp artist Georg (Joris) Hoefnagel (1542-1600), engraved the Civitates plates. Not only did he contribute mostly original material to Spanish and Italian cities, but he also adapted and altered works by other contributors.
