[ With :] – Explication des termes de marine employez par les edicts, ordonnances et reglemens de l'Admirauté. Seconde Edition reveuë et augmentée. Bordeaux: Jacques Mongiron Millanges, 1660-1661. A thorough treatment of maritime law, including a passage on whaling, this work also contains two chapters attributing the discovery of America, specifically Newfoundland and Canada, to Basque voyagers a century before Columbus. Second, augmented and corrected edition (first 1647). Alden & Landis 671/76; Brunet V, 1020; Polak 1764. Two parts with separate titles and pagination in one vol., quarto (220 x 155mm). Woodcut head- and tail-pieces (some browning, occasional spotting, last two leaves repaired in the gutter, very faint erasure to the title). Contemporary mottled calf, sides with gilt centrepieces with the arms of Michel-Etienne Turgot, panelled spine lettered and decorated in gilt (extremities rubbed, a few abrasions). Provenance: Michel-Etienne Turgot (1690-1751), father of the famous economist Anne Robert Jacques Turgot and chief of the municipality of Paris as provost of merchants, who commissioned the illustrious, extraordinarily detailed map of Paris ‘Plan de Turgot’ (his gilt arms on the binding, Oliver 1633 fer 2).
