CLEMENS, SAMUEL LANGHORNE. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. New York: Charles L. Webster 1890. Small 4to, original pictorial green cloth, very worn, inner hinges broken, some marginal tears, later printing (first published in 1889), profusely illustrated by Dan Beard, WITH EXTENSIVE SIGNED PENCILLED ANNOTATIONS BY BEARD REGARDING HIS ILLUSTRATIONS (some 19 separate annotations totalling about 250 words, including his signatures, on the title-page and next to 18 illustrations). Johnson/ Clemens , p. 52: "The illustrations by Dan Beard, in his own right a writer of reform tales, added greatly to the author's ideas. An unusual feature of the illustrations was the use of then living industrialists and rulers as 'models' for the depicted characters." A sample of Beard's annotations: "These illustrations were made in seventy working days; each evening a boy would come and gather up the work of the day and when the pictures were all done the book was finished. Dan Beard" (on title-page); "The helmet in the left hand corner Mark Twain said was a 'constant source of joy' to him. D. Beard" (on frontispiece); "Model for queen was Anne Russell. D. Beard" (next to picture of Queen Guenever, p. 56); "This man claimed that he was starving and he was , but I gave him no food until I finished the sketch because I wanted the hungry look. DC Beard" (in margin below illustrations, p. 109); "Waiter from Delmonico's...posed for this..." (illustration, p. [115]); "I used a photograph of the Queen [Victoria] for pose but this was only to get the 'queenly pose' (below illustration of old sow, p. [237]); "Model was baby daughter of Will James, vice president Queens Co. Savings Bank, Flushing L.I., DC Beard" (picture of "The Slave Driver," p. [465]). A gift inscription dated "Aug. 22 1890" on front flyleaf.
