Original brown cloth, blocked and lettered in gilt and black (some rubbing at edges, front hinge weak); brown quarter morocco slipcase. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Clemens on the front free endpaper: "With the kindest regards of Mark Twain." This copy has all first state issue points, with the tail-piece on page 441 depicting an urn, flames and the head of Mark Twain, later omitted at the request of Clemens' wife, and with the image on page 443 captioned "The St. Louis Hotel."
