Webb 1867. 12mo, original green cloth, bevelled edges, the gilt frog is in the lower left part of the front cover, very slight wear at heel of spine and three fore-corners, front cover a trifle soiled, a few pages foxed, extreme upper right corner of front free endpaper clipped; green half morocco slipcase. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, OF THE AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK, inserted leaf of advertisements at front. BAL 3310; Johnson Mark Twain , p. 3; Zamorano 80 , no. 17: "Perhaps no short sketch of Twain's so quickly won wide popularity as did 'The Jumping Frog.' Calaveras County, California, is known to thousands who have never seen the Golden State simply because of this gem of humor." A better-than-average copy of the book that catapulted Mark Twain to literary celebrity. Provenance : Herschel V. Jones, bookplate.
