CLEMENS, SAMUEL LANGHORNE, "Mark Twain". The Prince and the Pauper. A Tale for Young People of All Ages. By Mark Twain. With One Hundred and Ninety-Two Illustrations. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company 1882. Small 4to, ORIGINAL SPECIAL BINDING FOR THE AUTHOR of white linen, sides with gilt border and "MT" gilt monogram in center, spine gilt-lettered with gilt rules at ends, t.e.g., others uncut, wood-grained white endpapers and original blue cloth at inner hinges, small ink stain on front cover, ends of spine and fore-corners a little frayed, covers a bit foxed and darkened, title-page and a few other leaves slightly foxed, extreme bottom edges of a few leaves with traces of staining, brown morocco folding case. First American Edition, Franklin Press inprint on copyright page, ONE OF A FEW COPIES PRINTED ON CHINA PAPER AND IN THIS SPECIAL BINDING FOR THE AUTHOR'S USE, THE DEDICATION COPY TO HIS DAUGHTER CLARA (the book is dedicated to Clara and her sister Susy), inscribed by Clemens below the printed dedication: "To that good-mannered & agreeable child, Clara Clemens, This book is affectionately offered by Her Father the Author. Hartford, Xmas, 1881"; and later inscribed by him above the printed dedication: "This is one of six or eight copies that were printed on India paper -- or Japanese paper, if you prefer that name. Dec. 1883." Pasted to the inside front cover is a ruled octavo leaf bearing Clemens's pencilled notes from his historical reading for the writing of The Prince and the Pauper , labelled by him, "Notes -- from Froude, Hume, etc.," and signed "Mark Twain" in ink, 2 pp., 8vo, the verso pasted to the inside cover, obscuring the notes on that side. The book's printed dedication reads: "To those Good-Mannered and Agreeable Children Susie and Clara Clemens, This Book is Affectionately Inscribed by Their Father." As Justin Kaplan recounts in his Mr. Clemens and Mark Twain (New York, 1966), p. 239: "During the winter months of 1881 the women and children had their say [about The Prince and the Pauper -- Clemens was uncertain about the possible reception of the book and was advised to read the manuscript aloud to his family]. Sitting by a blazing fire, with Susy and Clara on the arms of his chair [italics ours], with Livy and their visitor, Mary Fairbanks, listening intently, Clemens read his manuscript aloud, and they pronounced it good...In recognition of his ideal audience he was to dedicate The Prince and the Pauper to Susy and Clara..." The Prince and the Pauper is the only Clemens book for which special author's copies were prepared and these China paper copies are of very great rarity. BAL notes that "the precise number of copies...printed [on China paper, or India paper as Clemens calls it] is not known. A copy in NYPL is inscribed by the author: "This is one of six copies that were printed on India paper...(No, there may have been eight)..." Provenance : Clara Clemens Gabrilowitsch, later Samossoud, Mark Twain's daughter -- Phyllis Harrington, secretary to Clara's second husband, Jacques Samossoud, and, after his death, secretary and companion to Clara, by bequest (sale, Christie's New York, 11 May 1987, lot 11).
