Autograph manuscript signed ("Grover Cleveland"), a draft of an address or essay on "Adversity," comprising some 450 words, 2 pages, large folio, paginated 1 and 2, written on rectos only, each sheet neatly backed for preservation . With full typed transcription. A draft, with many corrections and revisions of a long essay or address on Adversity: "Of course it will not do to count adversity among the necessary requisites to life's success...I propose to clash with the great majority, who in their efforts to reach the goal, are doomed to encounter difficulties and adversity. We see among these such a large proportion who have won, and who on their way to greatness, fame and wealth, have overcame these obstacles, as in themselves helpful factors in building up success. A moment's reflection, however, presents them in their true light as being, in their unadulterated condition, ugly and troublesome hindrances. It is only when by the chemistry of God, they are mixed with certain other elements and are subjected to the action of certain solvents, that they may be transmutted to useful stimulants in man's highest and best efforts..."
